Area

Called Buck Hall, the site is a few miles north of Charleston, along
the east side of U.S. 17. Easy in, easy out. . Back in paved spots. Hot
showers. Full range of electric hookups at the site. I use only the
smaller amps, is it 15? Cost was $15 a night, or half that with my
senior card, but I believe it has gone up in price a few bucks. $20
without the senior card. There are only 14 pad sites so get there as
early as you can, in season. Five tent camping sites, $15 a night, full
price.
If the place is full when you arrive,
they have an overflow dry-camping
area. Whether they charge for that, I don’t know since I made it a
point to arrive early in the day to have the best chance of getting a
hookup site.
I found the site to be very nice.
Grounds clean, right near a major
north-south waterway (ICW), and behind a barrier reef with the Atlantic
beyond.

Free sites, when I was there in late
2001, were those at Guilliard Lake
and Honey Hill. The site for info on them and others, and directions
is:

I see that Guilliard Lake is still
free. I drove into it but did not
stay overnight. It is easy in, easy out, but rather slow because at
least part of the road in was not paved but was a typical bumpy
national forest road. Plenty of shaded spaces, quiet, peaceful, and no
one there when I visited.
I stayed one night at Honey Hill. Free,
when I was there. Water, but no
electric. This place is easy to miss, as I did, and drive way into the
forest. It is right beside Highway 45, on the south side, and right at
the old fire watch tower. Look for the tower immediately on your right
when you pull in and you will see the camping area. A large circle,
wide back-in sites with picnic table and grill. I was there in
September or so 2001 and there were a few others there. Quiet,
peaceful, excellent neighbors on one side, none on the other.
I was headed for the Slabs then so only
stayed one night. When I am in
the area again, I will stay longer if space is available.
